Rain lashed against the windows of Maya’s cramped apartment, mirroring the turmoil inside her. She paced, the worn floorboards groaning under her frantic footsteps. The leather wallet, clutched tightly in her hand, felt like a live thing. The previous owner's ID mocked her from inside.

She bit at her lip, a nervous habit she’d been trying to break. The phone rang, a shrill, unwelcome sound that made her jump. It was her landlord, complaining about the overdue rent. Each ring echoed in her ears.

She thought about using the money, just enough to cover the debt, just to buy a little peace of mind. Then, she imagined the consequences, the inevitable guilt. She picked up the phone, voice cracking, and told him she’d call him back.
